This helps you identify what you are looking at by the traits that you are looking at. Example: Is the organism multicellular or is it unicellular (one).

It is one creature against other creatures, that creature does not have the feature that all the rest has.
Example: Hag fish has no jaw, but a perch has a jaw, but the perch does not have lungs, but a salamander does.
