Respiratory System in birds:

Birds need lots of oxygen continuously when flying.    Their respiratory system is elaborate  and highly efficient, which causes them to need lots of oxygen continuously, which speeds up their metabolic rate.

Birds has two nostrils located at the base of the beak.    When air passes through the nostrils it passes through the trachea.  When it goes through the trachea, after the trachea it goes through the bronchi, which leads to the air sacs within the lungs.
